Story
Hi there!
I’m making a difference and doing a 9-day hike on the Kokoda Track in July 2019 to help turn the tide of diabetes in the South Pacific.
According to World Statistics – The International Diabetes Federation, there were 371 million people with diabetes in 2017. It is estimated that by 2035, there will be 592 million people with diabetes.
- There are already 30 million people with diabetes in the Western Pacific Region
- 1.4 million people with diabetes in the territories of the South Pacific Division
- 1 in 4 Pacific Islanders (adult) is a diabetic
Through ADRA's 10,000 Toes Campaign, three strategies have been identified to help turn the tide:
- Provide diagnostic kits for diabetes detection
- Educate and equip communities to take charge of their health
- Training health professionals to diagnose Type 2 Diabetes early and to better manage the complications
